(Google Discover): GIS Mapping & Cloud Governance
आजकल 'Cloud Computing in Election Management' और 'Free Google Services for GIS Mapping' इंटरनेट और Google News पर काफी ट्रेंड कर रहे हैं।
Nowadays, Cloud computing is the latest technology trend. Let us understand what Cloud computing is and how it can be used by an individual, Government, and Non-Government organizations.
What is Cloud Computing?
Definition: Cloud computing is a style of computing where scalable and elastic IT-related capabilities are provided as a service to customers using internet technologies.
Cloud computing is the use of computing resources (hardware and software) that are delivered as a service over a network (typically the Internet). Users can access cloud computing using networked client devices such as desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. These are called cloud clients.
What is a Cloud?
A Cloud is a collection of shared (or multi-tenant) computing resources that are easily accessed and consumed at will. Cloud computing refers to both the applications delivered as services over the Internet and the hardware and systems software in the data centers that provide those services.

Cloud Deployment Models
- Private Cloud: Enterprises create private clouds for exclusive use. Internal data centers of a business or other organization are not made available to the general public.
- Public Cloud: Providers offer services to multiple customers. Applications, storage, and other resources are made available to the general public. These services are free or offered on a pay-per-use model (e.g., Amazon AWS, Microsoft, and Google). The service being sold is utility computing.
- Hybrid Cloud: The combination of both public and private clouds.
| Public Clouds | Private Cloud |
|---|---|
| Lower upfront costs | High efficiency |
| Economies of scale | High Availability |
| Simpler to manage | Elastic capacity |
| Both Offer: High efficiency, High availability, and Elastic capacity. | |
Free Public Cloud Services by Google
Public cloud computing is an alternative sourcing option for government organizations that want to use an application as a service. We can use free services from vendors like Google to create better applications for individual, Govt, and Non-Govt purposes. The data is stored securely in cloud data centers and can be accessed from any device.
- 📧 Gmail: A robust, cloud-based email service.
- 📝 Google Docs: Web-based software for building text documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Allows multiple users to edit/update simultaneously, view history, and export in various formats.
- ☁️ Google Drive: An online storage system providing 15 GB for free. It easily syncs files between your computer and cloud account.
- 📊 Fusion Tables: An experimental data visualization web application to gather, visualize, and share large data tables via maps or charts.
- 🗺️ Google Map Engine Lite: Helps create advanced custom maps to share with collaborators. Import locations and use layers to visualize content.
- 🖼️ Picasa: A tool to upload, share, and edit images, and attach locations to photos using Google maps.
- 🌐 Google Sites: Makes creating and sharing a group website easy. You can display videos, slideshows, calendars, and text in one central location.

Case Study: GIS Based Polling Booth Project
By integrating all these free Google services, I have created a GIS-based website for a polling booth information system. This website is useful for better planning and management of the electoral process.
Project Link: Dindori Polling Booth Information System
It makes use of GIS-based mapping tools and maps the following crucial aspects of poll management on Google Maps using layers:
- Layer 1: Polling station with complete infrastructure details including photographs.
- Layer 2: Critical polling stations.
- Layer 3: Shadow areas.
- Layer 4: Long Route as per AC Wise route charts.
- Layer 5: Vulnerability mapping.
These layers have been mapped with the help of free Google services (Google Map Engine Lite, Fusion Tables, Picasa, Google Drive, etc.).

Q3. GIS-Based Polling Booth Project
